Apple is rumored to launch new versions of its MacBook Air and 13-inch MacBook Pro later this year, according to a Sunday newsletter from Bloomberg's Mark Gurman. However, updated models of the higher-end, 14- and 16-inch MacBook Pros are said to not arrive until 2023. 

The MacBook Air was originally rumored to debut at the end of 2021 or in early 2022, but Gurman now speculates that a redesigned MacBook Air will be coming near the second half of this year. The upcoming Apple laptop is also said to feature an updated design, MagSafe and an M2 chip. 

As for the MacBook Pro, the new 13-inch model is rumored to sport an M2 chip as well. The laptop could arrive as early as June for Apple's WWDC. 

Apple didn't immediately respond to a request for comment. 

Hyundai and Kia have issued a recall for 2016-2018 Santa Fe, 2017-2018 Santa Fe Sport, 2019 Santa Fe XL, 2014-2015 Tucson, 2016-2018 K900 and 2014-2016 Sportage models over concerns that a short circuit in the antilock brake system could cause an engine compartment fire. The recall specifically asks owners of affected models to park their vehicles outside until a fix has been performed.

The specific issue stems from a faulty ABS multifuse and potentially a faulty ABS module. The fix for the problem involves replacing either the multifuse or, possibly, the module where necessary. This work, like all recall work, will be performed free of charge by your local Hyundai or Kia dealer.

Owners of affected vehicles can expect to be notified by mail around April 5 for Hyundai and around March 31 for Kia. Those owners who have questions in the meantime can contact Hyundai's customer service department at 1-855-371-9460 and refer to recall No. 218. Kia owners can call 1-800-333-4542. Kia's number for this recall is SC227.

The Doctor had better watch out. Emmy and Tony Award-winning actor Neil Patrick Harris is joining Doctor Who, and not as one of the good guys.

Once and future Doctor Who showrunner Russell T. Davies posted a photo of Harris in costume to his Instagram on Monday. Harris sports a severe gray haircut, pince-nez glasses, and what looks like a shop apron over a button-up shirt and floppy tie.

"Neil Patrick Harris, welcome to Cardiff!" Davies wrote in the Instagram post's caption. "Playing the greatest enemy the Doctor has ever faced. Such a great actor, such a great man, it's an honour and a hoot. Have fun!"

Harris also posted the photo to Instagram, writing, "My current gig. Never looked more dashing. Thank you for inviting me into your Whoniverse, Russell T. Davies. I'll try my hardest to do my worst. This Doctor has no idea what's in store. And even if he does... Who cares? Ha ha ha HA ha-ha-ha!"

Of course, Doctor Who fans want to know just what that "greatest enemy" teaser means, and who exactly Harris will be portraying. But that info is all still confidential.

"It's my huge honour to open our studio doors for the mighty Neil Patrick Harris... but who, why, what is he playing?" Davies wrote in a statement. "You'll just have to wait. But I promise you, the stuff we're shooting now is off the scale. Doctor beware!"

Davies served as Doctor Who showrunner from 2005 to 2010, and will return to the show in that role in 2023. 

The role of the Doctor is getting a new acto,r too. Ncuti Gatwa will play the role of the 14th Doctor, the BBC announced in May. He'll be the first Black actor to play the role, replacing Jodie Whittaker, the first woman to play the role. No specific dates have been announced for either Gatwa's or Harris' first appearance.

That's more like it. Following a string of wildly popular but not very good action movies (Red Notice, Extraction), Netflix delivers with The Gray Man, streaming now. This rip-roaring and star-powered spy romp from the Russo brothers throws all the money at the screen as Ryan Gosling and Chris Evans go head to head.

Having played in some theaters and streaming on Netflix since Friday, July 22, The Gray Man has already been successful enough for Netflix to confirm a sequel (with Gosling returning) and spinoff (from the writers of Deadpool).

The Gray Man opens with Gosling in prison two decades ago, wisecracking at Billy Bob Thornton's unflappable CIA spook. "We get it, you're glib," Thornton responds, but as Gosling contemplates a life of murder for the government, his eyes soften mournfully. And when we catch up to Gosling in the modern day, now a slick killing machine known only as Sierra 6, he's a jaded shell only good for dispatching nameless bad actors who got on the wrong side of Uncle Sam. Except he finds himself at odds with his calculating boss after he refuses to endanger a child.  

Woah woah woah. Seriously? In this, the year 2022, we're still making movies about assassins who go rogue because they won't kill a kid?

OK, fine. So anyway, Gosling comes into conflict with Chris Evans' unhinged mercenary as they're both sent to retrieve a vital USB drive, and --

Hang on, hang on. No. I'm not having it. A USB drive? After 60 years of James Bond on screen, after six (and counting) Mission: Impossible movies, a spy movie hinges on a frickin' thumb drive!

So yeah. On paper, The Gray Man has all the elements of a formulaic spy genre (and I do mean all the elements -- there's about four movies' worth of stuff going on). Thumb drives. A kidnapped niece. Bureaucrats who are the real villains. Wet teams striding across airfields in body armor. Action scenes cutting to analysts panicking in front of walls of monitors. Tense phone calls in skyscrapers. Rooftop helipads and secure lines and guys making the bullets fall out of a gun before the other guy can shoot him. 

But as yet another city name blares across the screen in massive letters, you start to wonder if the filmmakers are mocking the conventions of the spy genre. Directors Joe and Anthony Russo, the men behind several of Marvel's Captain America and Avengers movies, are very self-aware about the type of flick they're making. The quippy banter and sharp action are heightened and stylized, and just a ton of fun. We get it, they're glib. 

That's what sets The Gray Man apart from formulaic plods like Extraction or Amazon's turgid Without Remorse. From the opening scene, in which Gosling goes into battle in a crisp scarlet suit twirling a water pistol, to his silent silhouetted dispatching of a platoon of bodyguards with whatever cutlery comes to hand, the flick has swagger to burn. Don't be fooled by the title: There's nothing gray about the lush cinematography, kinetic camerawork and playful music. The Gray Man is up there with the stylized likes of Atomic Blonde, and might give John Wick a run for his money.

A big part of the film's success is the star wattage on display, Gosling and Evans (and super-charismatic guest star Dhanush) handling the action heroics and quippy banter with equal assuredness. Gosling plays it relatively straight, although Sierra 6's real name is Courtland Gentry, which means he has not one but two improbably cool action hero names. Evans hams it up for the both of them as a suavely unhinged torturer with a wardrobe of natty knitted polo shirts, like James Bond's maladjusted little brother. His character, by the way, is called Lloyd Hanson, which is less cool than Sierra 6 but sticks in your mind because someone says it literally every 20 seconds.

I mention the names because Ana de Armas is also in this film, but I'm darned if I could tell you what her character's called. While the main guys have backstory (even if Evans' is just "went to Harvard"), her character doesn't have any motivating story that I can recall. The script doesn't even give her much of a personality apart from obligatory super-badassness, and being grumpy when guys yell at her. At least de Armas' appearance in Bond film No Time to Die was essentially a cameo, but this is a waste of the white-hot star of the moment.

This being an action flick, the many international stopovers lead to violence. It's all fun and games, obviously, all stylishly shot shootouts and rollicking punch-ups. But then there's a huge showdown in the streets of a European city. High-velocity rounds destroy homes. High-caliber death machines sweep crowded public squares. You might not see it, but regular normal people going about their everyday lives clearly get killed in horrible ways. In the wake of public shootings in the US, Denmark and Norway (and that's just this year) this callous ultraviolence hits different.

Maybe, just maybe, that's the point. After this apocalyptic battle, the film doesn't merrily exfil to the next exotic location. Instead, it lingers in a hospital, surrounded by the wounded and dying. Admittedly, this is partly a setup for the next fight. But The Gray Man at least shows a glimmer of thought about the savagery unfolding on screen, about the silver-screen depiction of violence as redemptive and protective, about the pointlessness of it all. It isn't exactly Drive or Only God Forgives, Gosling's 2011 and 2013 arthouse subversions (with director Nicolas Winding Refn) of the car chase and crime genres. But there's definitely a layer of subversive nuance going on here. It's telling that in this film's world of espionage, we never see any terrorists or doomsday weapons. The only threat to ordinary folk like you and me is the internal squabbling of various grubby sociopaths jockeying for power no matter who gets caught in the crossfire.

Ultimately, The Gray Man encourages us to enjoy the hell out of a stylish shoot-'em-up where good-looking people go bang-bang, while still nudging us to remember it's a fantasy. Maybe I'm squinting too hard to suggest this is Netflix's smartest action film, but it's definitely one of the most fun.

When Apple launched its latest line of MacBook Pros with the new M1 Max chips, I was excited, as a professional photographer, by the upgrades and what that could mean for working creatives. The 16-inch model with an M1 Max CPU impressed CNET's Dan Ackerman so much it earned a coveted Editors' Choice award.

So when I got one in my hands, I wanted to see how well it copes with a demanding professional photoshoot workload. 

I put the top-end 16-inch Pro with the M1 Max chip with 64GB of RAM to the test in a studio photoshoot with probably the world's best -- and most demanding -- camera. It's the Phase One XFIQ4, a commercial-standard medium format camera that churns out whopping 150-megapixel images and costs somewhere north of $60,000. This beast is in the hands of elite professional commercial photographers the world over, and its stunning, detailed images would be a great test for the M1 Max chip.

I put together an ambitious product photoshoot of a "technology stir fry" showing a variety of tech products being tossed in oil in a wok above roaring flames. It involved shooting all the different elements individually, then piecing together numerous images from the camera into the single, finished shot seen above. This kind of compositing work can be demanding on a system, especially when working with multiple high-resolution layers. 

The finished image was made of 28 full-resolution images, loaded into a single document in Photoshop, each one with its own masking, adjustments and other effects. In short, it's a behemoth of a Photoshop document, clocking in at almost 11GB in size. 

Anecdotally, working on the MacBook Pro felt swift. The camera was tethered over USB-C and the images were taken, imported and initially adjusted in Phase One's own Capture One Pro software, which has been optimized for Apple's M1 chips. It was zippy, with no noticeable lag when making adjustments to the images or when flicking between the shots I'd taken, despite their size. This alone was a relief, as some of my product photoshoots can involve taking hundreds upon hundreds of images and any slowdown from the machine can be frustrating.

I initially exported 45 full-resolution images (in Phase One's .IIQ format), which I loaded into an image stack in Photoshop. On the M1 Max MacBook it took 2 minutes, 44 seconds to load the images into the document. I did the same thing using the older 13-inch M1 MacBook Pro (a 2020 model with 16GB of RAM) and it struggled, crashing multiple times before eventually taking almost exactly 5 minutes to load the stack.

I then tried the same import test with a 2019 16-inch, Intel Core i9 MacBook Pro with 64GB of RAM, which took 4 minutes, 43 seconds. It should be noted that this MacBook is my work-provided one, and as such has a variety of security applications running in the background that could affect its performance.

Once loaded, I selected the layers and used the Auto-Align tool to ensure all the images lined up with each other. It's a demanding process but one that I use regularly for product photography, so efficient performance here is essential for my workflow. The M1 Max model took 6 minutes, 24 seconds to align the layers, the 16-inch Intel model took 7 minutes, 15 seconds while the 13-inch M1 model took a whopping 18 minutes, 20 seconds to complete the same task.  

The M1 Max MacBook handled the rest of the edit without any issue, allowing me to zoom in and out without lag or showing any real signs of slowing down. I ended up deleting some layers to get down to the 28 that made up the final image, yet even with every layer having its own masks and effects, the machine coped admirably with the edit process. 

My next test involved a focus stack of an image of an iPhone I shot with the Phase One camera. Focus stacking involves taking separate images of an object at different focus points before merging those shots to achieve pin-sharp focus from front to back. As with layer aligning, it's a demanding task for the processor. You can see the full breakdown below of times it took each MacBook to load the 12 individual 303MB DNG (Adobe Digital Negative raw) files into an image stack, align the images and then focus stack in Photoshop, but the M1 Max was way ahead of the others on every single test, with the focus stacking tool in particular seeming to benefit from the M1 optimizations in Photoshop.

Arguably that should come as no surprise, given that it's the latest model and it's running Apple's top-performing processor with the highest amount of RAM you can get it with. But pro photographers are a demanding bunch and time is money in a busy studio, so it's good to know the extra investment for the M1 Max will indeed result in faster and more efficient work.

Apple's iOS 15 made a number of changes to how notifications work, allowing iPhone users to prioritize important alerts and make less important notifications less intrusive. They're certainly less intrusive: Over the past few months I've been wrestling with my iPhone's settings to even see when my friends message me on WhatsApp, Signal, Instagram and other apps. In one extreme case, a friend texted me on Signal on a Friday, and I didn't even notice their text until Monday when I opened up the app -- thankfully it was nothing pressing, but I was embarrassed.

I'm not alone in this frustration. Multiple threads on Reddit are focused on trying to bring notifications back, whether due to changes in how notifications behave when Do Not Disturb is on, how notifications won't appear unless you proactively enter an app and people having such a difficult time with iOS 15's Focus feature that they're finding it easier to use apps with similar notification controls. 

Third-party app developers might not be able to control these systems either. WhatsApp has an FAQ page that specifically references the way Apple controls push notifications on the iPhone. While the issue appears to originate from WhatsApp, there's little the company can recommend apart from restoring the phone to factory settings and starting over. 

These issues have the potential to come to a head during the busy holiday season, since family and friends will use whatever device and messaging service is most convenient to get in touch. Notifications are the way we keep up with chats, whether your friends and family prefer iMessage, WhatsApp, Facebook Messenger or any other number of texting and video chat apps.

So let's go over some of the biggest obstacles that currently affect notifications and applicable solutions where possible.

iOS 15's Focus may need some tweaks

iOS 15's Focus mode is meant to be an evolution of Do Not Disturb. In addition to allowing users to select Do Not Disturb, which lets you silence notifications until it is turned off, it allows you to create situational profiles that are more custom tailored to your needs. For instance, I recently created a "Movies" focus that when enabled turns off notifications from all apps, phone calls and texts except for the RunPee app, which is a timer that sends a notification at the best times to leave a movie theater to take a restroom break. 

Focus, while well-intentioned, does however lead to an easy way to accidentally leave your phone in a state of not receiving notifications. Focus can also be enabled to be run across your various Apple devices, making it either convenient for silencing notifications for your needs or a liability if you only wanted to silence your phone but leave your iPad and Mac computers alone.

Accessing Focus for turning it on and off is fairly easy: You open Control Center by either scrolling down from the top-right corner of an iPhone with Face ID's display or scrolling up from the bottom of an iPhone with a home button's display. This should serve as a decent first start for figuring out whether Focus is the issue at fault. 

If it appears like the issues are the Focus settings themselves, you'll need to drill down by going to the iPhone's Settings app, scrolling down to Focus and entering the menu for the specific Focus you need to adjust. For instance, I noticed my Sleep focus that begins to activate around 10:50 p.m. was causing me to miss texts and video calls from friends that I do enjoy talking to before bed -- but I didn't want to leave my phone open for anyone to ring that late at night. I adjusted the Sleep focus to allow calls from specific people that I am OK with reaching me after that time. It's not elegant as now that smaller list could potentially decide to wake me up to calls at 3 a.m., but for now it's the best system for me. 

The way your notifications are delivered might also have been changed depending on your Focus settings. Instead of receiving notifications individually, your Focus may be collecting them together into a Summary. Tweaks to how that summary works can be found separately by going to Settings, Notifications and tapping Scheduled Summary to make tweaks or to turn the feature off. 

Do Not Disturb's changes may disturb how you use your phone

Do Not Disturb is now part of Focus, but it has a key tweak that appears to be messing with the way some people have previously used their phone. Before iOS 15, when turning on Do Not Disturb an iPhone wouldn't buzz or immediately display notifications while the phone was locked and the display was off. However, notifications would display if you were actively using the phone while it's in Do Not Disturb mode.

The fix isn't quite clean as of yet. Like with the previous example I gave of adjusting the settings of an individual Focus, you can adjust how the Do Not Disturb Focus behaves. In addition to selecting people you can ring your phone, you can pick specific apps that are allowed to notify you when you have Do Not Disturb on. However, then the apps you choose will notify your phone at all times when Do Not Disturb is enabled, whether your phone display is on or off.

If this bothers you, you aren't alone. A fairly active Reddit thread on r/iOS has been communicating on exactly that issue and sharing tips for workarounds until something official is hopefully baked in at a later date.

A strange solution for getting notifications back

During my own wrangling through various Reddits and Apple support pages to get my notifications working for WhatsApp, Signal and Instagram, I found a strange solution that has at least worked for myself.

In Apple's Support forums, one person discovered that turning on and off the "Announce Notifications" feature could possibly fix your phone's notifications. To access it, you go to Settings, then Notifications, then Siri, then turn Announce Notifications on. The feature is normally for allowing Siri to read your notifications out loud, such as when you are driving. But instead of leaving it on, exit out of the Settings app, then re-enter it and turn it back off.

Somehow when I do those steps, apps that aren't notifying me resume again. It doesn't make sense, but I've now run through these steps twice when I noticed the problem has resumed, and it's fixed it each time.

I'll keep updating this article as I find more solutions for getting notifications back in iOS 15. If you have found any roadblocks that have stopped you from receiving notifications or solutions to getting them back, feel free to write them in the comments.

It doesn't matter if you have an iPad, iPad Pro or iPad Air, there's no denying the excitement that accompanies using a new iPad, or even exploring what's new in a big software update on your old one. Once you get all your settings in order, there are many cool features you'll want to explore on your iPad.

There's a lot to see and do, but here are our favorite fun features on the iPad to get you started. 

Arrange your home screen widgets

When you finally reach your iPad home screen, you'll notice the widget layout. By default, your iPad will include the clock, notes, calendar, weather and news. You can edit this layout to best fit your needs. Even if you're happy with the default apps in place, long-press the app to see extra customization options, or hold and drag to rearrange the widgets. 

If you want to edit the widgets, swipe right on the screen and tap Edit. From here you can remove or add widgets, giving you quicker access to the e-book you're reading or your favorite games or streaming service.

Join the dark side

Apple will ask if you want to have your device in light or dark mode during initial setup, but you can always make changes in the Settings app. Tap Display & Brightness to swap between modes, set custom schedules (like your screen dimming at sunset), and use True Tone, the feature that automatically adjusts your screen's brightness based on current ambient lighting.

Split screen

I love using a split screen to keep a reference image nearby when I'm working on a drawing in the Procreate digital illustration app -- another CNET Editors' Choice award pick. But you can use split screen with just about any combination of apps. A common use might be opening your calendar app while writing out a to-do list in the reminders app. To start a split view, open an app, tap the small horizontal trio of dots at the top of your screen and choose the layout you want. 

Scribble for Apple Pencil

If you use an Apple Pencil with your iPad, the Scribble feature, introduced in iOS 14, lets you do more without having to put your pencil down. The feature converts your handwriting, letting you write in text fields that you'd previously type in. It's a great way to quickly jot down notes or put a personalized touch on things. For example, if you're sketching in Procreate and need a reference image, you can open Google, jot what you're searching for (just as you'd type it) and get the result -- all without putting down your Apple Pencil.

Save time with Touch ID

If your iPad has a fingerprint sensor, it's possible to enable Touch ID during your initial device setup. It's not a requirement, but it can make signing in, as well as confirming purchases and downloads a bit quicker. If you want Touch ID on your iPad, open the Settings app and choose Touch ID & Passcode. The device passcode is one of the first things you're prompted to set up after turning on your iPad, but you can change or turn off the passcode here as well.

To set up Touch ID, tap Add a Fingerprint and follow the prompts. Afterward, you can customize what your Touch ID can be used for, like unlocking your device and password autofill.

Use Sign in with Apple 

Sign in with Apple is a feature to be aware of and use, rather than a setting to adjust on your device. The tool is another layer of defense for your security, like adjusting your device's privacy settings or using privacy tools like a virtual private network or DuckDuckGo. 

When you create a new account for an app or website, you can choose Sign in with Apple instead of signing in with Facebook, Google or email. The tool creates a random email address that can only be used for one specific app. The app or website will use the generated email, but Apple will forward any correspondence to your real email, protecting your identity. You can reply to whichever emails you like without exposing your personal email address. 

There's also the Hide My Email option. Apple creates a random email address for you to use when signing up for any service -- you'll recognize it by the unique alphanumeric string followed by @privaterelay.appleid.com. 

Speech to text

If your ideas are flowing faster than you can type them out, the iPad has a dictation feature that works across email, text messages and notes. For example, you can open the Notes app and tap the microphone icon on the keyboard. Apple will ask if you want to enable dictation; tap yes. Now when you tap the microphone when it's available on the keyboard, you can use speech to text. If you use speech to text in third-party apps, you may have to grant additional permissions. 

To turn off speech to text, open the Settings app and tap Keyboards. Scroll down and toggle off Enable Dictation.

Learn more about your photos

The iPad photos app has a handy tool that works a bit like Google Lens. Open the photos app, choose an image and tap the little "i" in the upper-right corner. A panel will open and you can see details like camera spec information, as well as when the photo was taken. You can also add a caption and the location of the image. 

You can also learn more about what's in your photo. Tap the Look Up option in the info panel and your iPad will offer information from Siri, the web and maps (if applicable).

Netflix, for years, was notoriously tight-lipped about its viewership. But after a few years of dropping stats for some of its programming, Netflix launched a website in mid-November posting charts of its most popular shows and movies from the past week, as well as a global ranking of its all-time most watched titles. 

The charts, which are updated every week and ranked by the total number of hours that subscribers spent watching them, represent an unprecedented trove of data about what's popular on Netflix. The site details the most popular titles in the last week not only globally but also for more than 90 countries. And it's meant to help subscribers like you get a better sense of the biggest hits on the world's largest subscription streaming service, in the hopes you'll discover something new to watch. 

The company updates its weekly "Top 10 on Netflix" every Tuesday, based on hours viewed from Monday through Sunday the previous week for original and licensed titles. The rankings are broken down into top 10 charts for films in English, TV in English, films in non-English languages and TV in non-English languages.

A ranking of all-time most watched titles also lives on the site, detailing shows that have the most viewing hours in their first 28 days of release. If a new season releases its episodes in two parts on different dates, Netflix counts the watch time of the first volume's episodes for their first 28 days, then it counts the watch time of the second volume's episodes for their first 28 days. These all-time rankings are also updated every Tuesday, whenever any programs make it into the charts during the week prior.

Samsung is bringing its new $300 Galaxy A23 5G phone to the US, which adds another model into the company's A-series of cheaper phones. The phone is the latest to target budget-conscious customers amid growing competition in the affordable phone space from Google and Apple. It also comes as inflation has impacted smartphone shipments. The Galaxy A23 5G will be available on Sept. 1 through Samsung, AT&T, T-Mobile and other retailers.

Samsung previously announced the Galaxy A23 5G, but it's only just now bringing it to the US market. At $300, the A23 is cheaper than the $400 Galaxy A42 5G but slightly more expensive than the $250 Galaxy A13 5G. It's also priced in line with the OnePlus Nord N20 5G, which is also $300. 

The Galaxy A23 5G has a 6.6-inch screen with a 120Hz refresh rate, making it roughly the same size as many of Samsung's other A-series phones. Unlike Samsung's pricier devices, there's a V-shaped notch for the front camera rather than a more subtle hole-punch cutout. 

Although the Galaxy A23 5G technically has four rear cameras, it's really the 50-megapixel main camera that's worth paying attention to. The ultrawide camera has just a 5-megapixel sensor, which means the resolution may not be very sharp. Similarly, there's also a 2-megapixel macro lens for taking close up shots and a 2-megapixel depth lens. While those latter three cameras have a lower resolution, it's fairly common at this price for just the main camera to get the best specs. The front selfie camera has an 8-megapixel resolution. 

Like many of Samsung's A-series phones, the Galaxy A23 5G has a 5,000 mAh battery. When testing Samsung's under-$200 Galaxy A phones, my colleague Mike Sorrentino said he was able to get through about two days with that battery capacity. Keep in mind, however, that none of those phones support 5G while the A23 does. Boosting the A23 5G's refresh rate, which enables smoother scrolling, will also likely drain the battery faster. 

The Galaxy A23 5G runs on Qualcomm's Snapdragon 695 processor, the same chip found inside the similarly priced OnePlus Nord CE 2 Lite 5G and the N20 5G. There's 64GB of internal storage, which is a step up from the 32GB of storage found on Samsung's sub-$200 phones like the Galaxy A03S and matches the $250 Galaxy A13 5G. But like that phone, the Galaxy A23 5G also comes with a microSD card slot that allows for up to 1TB of expandable storage. 

Although Samsung's Galaxy S phones and foldable devices draw the most attention, its Galaxy A line has been successful. The Galaxy A series made up 58% of Samsung's overall smartphone sales in 2021, according to data from Counterpoint Research provided to CNET.

But Samsung is also facing more competition from rivals like Google and Apple. Google's $449 Pixel 6A, which directly competes with the $450 Galaxy A53 5G, was well received by critics. Apple also launched the third-generation $429 iPhone SE in March.

Still, consumers are craving even more affordable devices as inflation has impacted smartphone demand, reports market research firm Canalys Research. Brian Lynch, an analyst with Canalys Research, said in a recent report that devices that cost between $250 and $600 like the iPhone SE, Galaxy A53 5G and Galaxy A33 performed poorer than expected. Meanwhile, demand for lower-end devices is remaining solid, according to Lynch's report. The Galaxy A23 5G is part of Samsung's effort to further reach consumers in the US looking to spend well below $500 on a new 5G phone.

WhatsApp is bringing digital payments to its users in Brazil, according to a blog post on Monday. The app's payments are enabled through Facebook Pay, an online payment service the social media giant announced late last year. 

The expansion of Facebook Pay on WhatsApp aims to let people safely and easily send money through the app, according to WhatsApp. The messaging app will require a special six digit PIN or fingerprint scan to prevent unauthorized transactions. 

Sending money or making a purchase using WhatsApp's digital payments will be free for consumers, but businesses will pay a processing fee to receive customer payments, the company said.

To use digital payments, Brazil users can link their credit or debit card. WhatsApp will be initially partnering with local Brazilian banks including Banco do Brasil, Nubank, Sicredi and Cielo.

Facebook has partnered with Visa to help power the payment feature on WhatsApp in Brazil using Visa Direct and Cloud Tokenization. 

Payments on WhatsApp are only available in Brazil so far, but the app said it looks forward to bringing digital payments to more countries in the future. WhatsApp didn't immediately respond to a request asking when the feature would come to the US.

Facebook Pay is already available on Facebook and Messenger in the US.

Samsung's next Unpacked event is today -- here's how you can watch it live -- and we're expecting to see a couple new foldable phones. Samsung's trailer for the event shows off what could be the rumored Galaxy Z Flip 4 and Galaxy Z Fold 4. 

Although the Galaxy Z Flip and Fold 4 are both foldable phones, they differ in many ways. The most noticeable difference is that the Z Fold bends like a book, while the Z Flip folds vertically. Last year's Z Flip 3 was dubbed the "most normal foldable available," by CNET's Patrick Holland, and the upcoming Z Flip 4 will probably bring some welcome upgrades and refinements.

We're collecting all the rumors regarding the Galaxy Z Flip 4's release date, price, new features and specs, and will be updating this story as new information becomes available. Here's what we've heard so far. Just note that, since these are rumors, none of the specs have been confirmed by Samsung. 

But to encourage people to reserve their phones early, from July 19 until Aug. 10, Samsung is offering an extensive list of discounts based on different bundles, from a maximum of $200 off for those reserving a Galaxy phone, watch and buds down to a minimum of $30 off for just reserving Galaxy buds. While this could be a hint of what's coming at Unpacked, the savings could apply to older Galaxy Watch or Galaxy Buds models.

Release date: Will we see the Galaxy Z Flip 4 on Aug. 10?

Following rumors about an August Unpacked from tipster Evan Blass, Samsung confirmed that it will hold an event on Aug. 10, 2022. It's still unclear what exactly will be announced at the company's upcoming event, but Samsung's invitation and trailer shows what appears to be a new version of the clamshell Galaxy Z Flip. 

Looking at the history of the foldable phone (and that of its Galaxy Z Fold sibling), we can broadly deduce when to expect the new device. 

The Galaxy Z Flip's launches don't appear to follow a specific pattern, as the original was announced in February 2020 and the Galaxy Z Flip 3 was released in August 2021. However, Samsung seems to have buddied the device with the Galaxy Z Fold, which is why the Z Flip jumped from version 1 to 3 -- to match the naming convention of the Z Fold. 

The 2019 Galaxy Fold and 2020 Z Fold 2 were released in September, while the Z Fold 3 debuted in August 2021. If Samsung plans on releasing the phones as a pair, we can likely expect the Galaxy Z Flip 4 in August or September alongside the Galaxy Z Fold 4, which aligns with the upcoming event date. 

Price: The Galaxy Z Flip 4 could be less expensive

We haven't yet heard much in terms of the Galaxy Z Flip 4's possible price. But, we can look to rumors about the Galaxy Z Fold 4 for hints. 

A Korean leaker who goes by the handle yeux1122 suggests the upcoming Galaxy Z Fold 4 will cost less than the Z Fold 3. (Leaker yeux1122 doesn't have much of a track record compared to others. MacRumors reported in February that they correctly guessed the iPad Mini 6's release time frame, but were incorrect about the tablet's screen size.) Although the tipster didn't provide any further detail, that speculation aligns with the phone's price history. The Galaxy Z Fold 3 ($1,800) got a price drop compared to the Fold 2 ($2,000). The price of the Galaxy Z Flip 3 was slashed last year as well to $1,000 from $1,380 for the original Z Flip.

With that in mind, it's within the realm of possibility for Samsung to decrease the cost of the Z Flip 4. But, like every other rumor, we won't know for sure until the company announces the device. 

Design: Larger cover screen and a new hinge

Rumors about the upcoming Galaxy Z Flip 4's display suggest Samsung's making a few small tweaks rather than large sweeping upgrades. According to Korean news site The Elec, the Z Flip 4 will retain the 6.7-inch internal foldable display of the Z Flip 3, but the external cover screen will slightly increase from 1.83 to 1.9 inches. Ross Young, co-founder and CEO of Display Supply Chain Consultants, however, believes that the cover display could increase further to 2 inches.

The Galaxy Z Flip 3's cover screen, the display on the outside when the phone is closed, is four times larger than that of the original Z Flip, and Holland lauded the move as a "step in the right direction." A slightly bigger cover screen could make reading notifications and swiping widgets a little easier. 

The Galaxy Z Flip 4 may also get a redesigned hinge. That is, according to leaker Ice Universe. The new hinge, which is also shown in leaked images of the foldable phone posted by Blass, would be thinner than those on the Galaxy Z Flip 3 and may give the phone's an overall slimmer design. 

According to a patent Samsung filed with the World Intellectual Property Office, however, the Galaxy Z Flip 4 may get more than just a new cover screen and hinge. The patent, as Dutch blog LetsGoDigital reported in March, shows a Galaxy Z Flip that has both a foldable and extendable screen that can be pulled out to create a display that is twice as large.

Cameras: Rotating lenses?

Samsung didn't upgrade the camera hardware for the Galaxy Z Flip 3, but the upcoming Z Flip 4 may offer some improvements. If rumors are to be believed, the new foldable will offer a rotating camera and a better under-display camera. 

Samsung filed another patent application with the World Intellectual Property Office for a clamshell phone sporting a rotating camera, as LetsGoDigital reported in 2021. The camera, which lives on the foldable's hinge, has two lenses and can pivot to be used when the phone is closed, open or at different angles in between. This means the camera could take selfies and meet other photography needs. 

Although a one-size-fits-all camera sounds neat, it may also cause the foldable's hinge to be significantly larger, making the phone itself bigger and bulkier. 

Additional rumors from Korean leaker yeux1122, suggest Samsung has tested versions of the Galaxy Z Flip 4 with an improved under-display camera that can be used on the cover screen, too. However, the company is also rumored to have tested versions of the phone with a perforated, punch-hole cutout display.

Battery

The Galaxy Z Flip 4 may have a larger battery capacity than its predecessor. According to leaker Ice Universe, Samsung's upcoming foldable phone could sport a 3,700-mAh battery. That's 400 mAh larger than last year's Galaxy Z Flip 3.

Snapdragon 8 Plus Gen 1 chip

Rumors from Ice Universe also suggest that the Galaxy Z Flip 4 and Galaxy Z Fold 4 may both run on the Snapdragon 8 Plus Gen 1 chip. The new chip would give the foldables a performance boost over the Galaxy Z Flip and Z Fold 3 which run on the Qualcomm Snapdragon 888. 

Color options 

The Galaxy Z Flip 4 is rumored to come in four colors, including blue, black, cream and a lavender option said to be called Bora Purple, according to supposed renders posted by MySmartPrice.
